AOL UK, the world's leading Internet Service Provider, has chosen Brightwave, the workplace learning specialist, to develop an e-learning programme designed to train staff about the company's new performance management processes that are rolled out this year. The e-learning programme covers communication, learning, and performance support to ensure successful adoption over a period of time.
"We are a fast growing company and it is important that our HR processes keep up with this growth, which is why we are introducing new processes for personal development and performance management," said Denise Cording, HR Business Partner for Learning & Development, for AOL UK. "The first step is to educate our employees about the processes, why we are introducing them and how they will affect individuals. We chose to work with Brightwave because we were impressed with their suggestion of developing a blend of communication and learning rather than a one-off experience."
When designing effective learning programmes Brightwave looks at the whole learning context. The programme therefore incorporates several elements designed to appeal to the specific needs of AOL staff: a short multimedia trailer to raise awareness, a 30-minute e-learning course using a storyline to cover the key topics, a quiz to check knowledge, an evaluation questionnaire, and an interactive process map as a performance support tool.
"Our experience tells us that in fast changing environments such as the industry that AOL works in, it's not sufficient to focus solely on providing an e-learning course in isolation," said Charles Gould, Managing Director for Brightwave. "It's vital to consider the bigger picture and how to best position and support the training piece before and after its launch and completion; in other words to adopt a holistic approach to the whole learning experience from start to finish. In this case, for example, we created interactive process maps as a performance support tool to bridge the learning-doing gap."
